It began development as Super Mario RPG 2, but the falling-out between Nintendo and Square after Final Fantasy jumped ship to PlayStation forced Intelligent Systems to reinvent it from scratch. Their solution was brilliant: a world made of paper and cardboard with turn-based battles where button timing turns every hit into a mini-game. Its diorama aesthetic launched a beloved sub-series and endless debates among fans.
